About the novel

For Adam and Sarah Ward, an inherited farm beside a Scottish loch offers a way out of a life coming apart. But the neighbours have one warning: leave the old road alone on Thursdays.

Then their daughter Kit begins to see a gray mare that no one else can see.

An inherited letter. A child's drawing. A glen that has learned to keep quiet.

As the Wards search for answers, the past begins to threaten the fragile future they came to build.

A Gothic mystery of family loyalties, buried guilt, and the cost of looking away.

From Chapter One

From Chapter 1: The Last Bill

The kitchen tap had been dripping for eleven days, and Adam Ward had not fixed it, because fixing it would have meant admitting there was time to spare.

He sat at the table with the overhead light off and the lamp from the hallway dragged in on its cord, so that the envelopes in front of him lay in a shallow yellow pool and the rest of the room went away into the dark.

Drip. A pause, long enough to hope. Drip.
